  Ovarian Cancer Clinical Trials and Novel Therapeutics

  It is a remarkable time for developing new treatments for gynecologic malignancies. The increasing understanding of cancer biology and the ability to design new drugs targeting cancer-related abnormalities have resulted in several novel anticancer drugs being approved by the FDA. There are now drugs that either block specific genetic changes in cancer, modulate the immune system, or represent ways to selectively deliver high doses of chemotherapies to the tumor with acceptable safety profiles. These “new drugs” undergo very rigorous testing in the laboratory, and only if they meet certain criteria as anticancer agents are they advanced to clinical trials. Early-phase trials are used to test new cancer treatments while ensuring the highest standards of patient safety. Later-phase trials bring these new drugs to become standard-of-care treatments. Based on findings from tumor samples and patient characteristics, we can now better select new treatments that are more likely to help patients, a process referred to as ‘personalized medicine’. During this talk, we will discuss personalized medicine, the phases of clinical trials, and the development of new anticancer treatments for ovarian cancer.

  Dr. Amanda Compadre is the featured speaker.

  Dr. Compadre is a gynecologic oncologist who specializes in caring for adults with gynecologic-related cancers and precancers. She specializes in treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, precision medicine, advanced robotics, and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, open abdominal surgery, and vulvar surgery.

  Dr. Compadre is passionate about serving a diverse patient population as an assistant professor of gynecologic oncology at OHSU. She is deeply committed to providing equitable care for patients in Portland and throughout Oregon. As a proud Latina and daughter of Mexican immigrants, she is fluent in Spanish and values providing culturally competent, language-concordant care.

  Her research interests include clinical trials, targeted therapies, and improving access to care and real-world outcomes for patients with gynecologic malignancies.

  Prior to OHSU, she completed fellowship training at Washington University in St. Louis and residency in OB/GYN at UCSF.

  Outside of work, she enjoys running, hiking, dancing, Peloton, exploring Portland, cooking, and trying new restaurants. She lives in Portland with her husband, twin daughters, and her cat.
