No matter how treatable, a cancer diagnosis causes us to look at life through a new lens. The future that was once imagined is blurred with a host of questions, concerns, and unknowns, among which is often making sure that our finances and affairs are in order.

A diagnosis can serve as an impetus to get important financial matters in order. It is helpful to consider how someone else can assist you while you are going through cancer treatment, and how to make things as easy as possible for you and your family. This is planning we all need to do, regardless of our health, but it is one thing that can bring some peace of mind to know that your affairs are in order and you can make things easier on you and your loved ones.

In this session, we will cover the following topics:

1. Documents you should have in place to help family manage your care

2. Wills and trusts

3. Beneficiaries, life insurance and digital accounts

About the Presenters:

Karey Schoenfeld

Karey joined the board of the Ovarian Cancer Alliance in the spring of 2016. Karey is an attorney who focuses on estate planning and administration in both Oregon and Washington. She is also licensed as a CPA in both states. Karey is actively involved in the Rotary Club of Vancouver and is the president of the Vancouver Rotary Foundation. She has also served on many nonprofit boards during her career. 

Mark Shafer

Mark graduated from the University of Oregon with a BA in Business Finance. After working in banking, he joined Merrill Lynch where he built a successful wealth management practice. During his 31-year career at Merrill Lynch, Mark earned his Certified Financial Advisor (CFP®) designation. Helping clients plan and save for retirement was a primary focus of his practice.

Mark’s wife Kelly was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2016 shortly after he retired. He was able to be a fulltime caregiver that year, and Kelly is now a six year ovarian cancer survivor while Mark serves on the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Oregon & SW Washington.
