Annual Survivor and Volunteer Luncheon

Sunday, April 28, 11:30am-2:00pm

McMenamins Kennedy School

The luncheon celebrates the lives of ovarian cancer survivors and those who volunteer for our organization.

Note: we define "survivor" as any woman who has ever received an ovarian cancer diagnosis, whether she is N.E.D. (yeah!), in current treatment for a first-time diagnosis, or facing a recurrence.

Ovarian cancer survivors and volunteers are invited to attend free of charge. Guests are welcome to attend, and we ask that they pay a small fee for their lunch.

This year's speaker is Jamie Newell, MSW, LCSW. Jamie is an inpatient palliative care social worker with the Connections Team at Providence Portland Medical Center. She will present on navigating conversations about your cancer diagnosis with loved ones which can often be challenging. It can be difficult to share candid information, communicate support needs, and hold the emotions, and reactions of others. This presentation will offer coping and communication tips along with a facilitated discussion to share experiences and strategies.

Jamie earned her master's degree in social work from Portland State University and has worked in various healthcare settings for the last 19 years. She completed a fellowship in palliative care in 2005. Preceding her work with Connections, she worked in outpatient oncology and palliative care for several years. Jamie also had a private practice, specializing in people dealing with illness and grief. Prior to that, she worked with a hospice and palliative agency for several years, where she directed their home palliative care program. Jamie currently chairs the Oregon Palliative Care and Quality of Life Interdisciplinary Advisory Council through the Oregon Health Authority. She recently co-authored a chapter for the Oxford University Handbook of Oncology and Palliative Care Social Work, which is forthcoming. Jamie is passionate about equitable healthcare and supporting patients and families as they navigate serious illness.
