Sherry Hanson, Scientific Research Advocate at OHSU

Sherry Hanson, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2009 and faced recurrences in 2011 and 2013, is a new Scientific Research Advocate with OHSU’s Knight Cancer Institute (KCI). Trained, and committed to a two-year term and a minimum of 40 volunteer hours each year, Sherry and the other advocates provide the patient/family/caregiver perspective to all kinds of KCI work.

According to The Knight, "the primary role of a research advocate is to represent the collective patient perspective, or the disease experiences of many patients, in the research process. Through this lens, advocates support researchers by providing feedback on grant applications, participating on advisory committees, writing letters of support and other projects."

Sherry also participates in the Survivor Teaching Students program run by the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Oregon and SW Washington. She is one of the Super Heroes featured in the Trust Your Gut ovarian cancer awareness campaign.
