Annual Survivor and Volunteer Luncheon

Sunday, April 23, 11:30am-2:00pm

McMenamins Kennedy School

The luncheon celebrates the lives of ovarian cancer survivors and those who volunteer for our organization.

Note: we define "survivor" as any woman who has ever received an ovarian cancer diagnosis, whether she is N.E.D. (yeah!), in current treatment for a first-time diagnosis, or facing a recurrence.

Ovarian cancer survivors and volunteers are invited to attend free of charge. Guests are welcome to attend, and we ask that they pay a small fee for their lunch ($25 per person).

This year's guest speaker is OSHU's Susan Hedlund, M.S.W., LCSW, OSW-C. Susan's presentation is entitled "Maintaining Hope in the Cancer Experience." For many women living with ovarian or other gynecological cancers, it has become a “chronic illness”. This may mean learning to live with side effects, uncertainty, and other challenges. This presentation will consider how to live well with cancer while maintaining hope and discovering new perspectives.

Susan has been an oncology social worker for thirty years and specializes in the development and provision of psychosocial support services for people with cancer and their loved ones. Currently she supervises adult oncology social workers at OHSU and coordinates wellness offerings of yoga, mindfulness-based stress reduction, exercise, massage, and retreats for people with cancer.

Previously, she directed the cancer counseling program at Cancer Care Resources (a program of the NW Cancer Specialists), as well as the Palliative Care Program at Hospice and Palliative Care of Washington County.

Susan has spoken and written extensively about the impact of cancer on individuals and families and on palliative and end of life care. Susan is a Senior Scholar for the Center for Ethics at OHSU, as well as a past-president of the Association of Oncology Social Work.
